Siemens intranet
- with tailor-made functionality for personalization

Siemens is one of the world’s largest companies within IT, electronics and electrical engineering. The Siemens AB-group has more than 475 000 employees in over 190 countries with a revenue of more than 87 billion Euro. In Sweden, Siemens is represented at more than 40 locations with a total of about 4 700 employees spread over ten different business areas.

Siemens IntranetSogeti Sweden were assigned to deliver a new intranet at the Siemens AB-group based on a standard platform for web publishing. An extended language support, simplicity for the editors and a high level of interactivity for the end-users were the fundamental requirements regarding the new intranet.

Specific requirements for an efficient intranet

Within the Siemens AB-group three different intranets had been used for a long time. The intranets were in great need of consolidation and a new web publishing tool was required. Two of the intranets were based on static and dynamic web sites, where the revising mainly was handled through tools such as Dreamweaver and Frontpage. Duplication of published information in other types of web publishing tools was very common, as Siemens Sweden frequently exchanged information between their different intranets.

The solution - tailor-made functionality for personalization

Sogeti Sweden has delivered an intranet solution based on the EPiServer standard platform for web publishing. The solution contains a tailor-made function for personalized information. Through the new intranet Siemens employees can filter information at the first page based on selected information areas. The single user can then choose the basic settings to present general company information as well as more local information, for instance which business area or office he or she belongs to. The solution also include an implementation of the EPiServer-module ImageVault, used for picture editing. All the fields of application for pictures have predefined formats for conversion, which facilitates the editors’ job significantly.

With the new intranet solution, Siemens has gained a more flexible platform for a common information management, spread over the business areas on a local as well as a national level.

“The new comprehensive intranet has in a very obvious way increased the transparency between Siemens’ various operations. Our company management can now in a quick and simple manner reach everyone, at the same time as every employee has the opportunity to organize the rest of the information flow on their start page”, said Björn Jerlin, Web Manager at Siemens AB.

"A common structure and terminology for all of Siemens Sweden, as well as simultaneous search functions in several systems, have increased the overall result and clearly simplified the work for all employees."
